DEM simulations of agglomerates impact breakage using Timoshenko beam bond model

Abstract Attrition and breakage of agglomerates are prevalent during production handling processes in many industries. Therefore, it is highly desirable to be able model analyse the agglomerate process under various loading conditions. The ensemble strength patterns still not well understood despite a significant amount research being carried out. In this study, three-dimensional discrete element method (DEM) simulation impact behaviour were performed using Timoshenko beam bond which considers axial, shear, twisting bending behaviours on bonds. An advantage pertinent parameters contact have clear physical meaning therefore could determined through corresponding experimental characterisations. mechanical properties bonds study firstly calibrated measurements. validation was then undertaken by direct comparisons between numerical results tests. It shown that time evolution obtained from had good agreement with observations. Numerical indicate most damage happens at early stage cone shape fracture zone formed quickly inside where strong compressive stresses concentrated. found exterior surrounded an arch tensile stress dominates propagation.
